Going Beyond Beyoncé

Since 1997, Beyoncé has earned, garnered and gained a plethora of fame & fortune. So much so, as to have a net worth of $760 Mil & counting. Fans are wondering if Queen Bey has ever used any of her influence for the greater good. Has she ever genuinely acknowledged better women doing better things?

Queen Bey has been the shimmering black diamond that can seemingly do it all: sing, dance, act, and occasionally send the internet into a frenzy with a queef. But let’s face it, even the mightiest among us can wear out their welcome. Just like the relic Madonna did back in the day when she decided that “reinventing” her image meant slapping on a different wig and insisting she was a “Kabal pop guru,” remember that? Yea, Madonna was once the poster child for this strategy, swapping styles and personas and sexual inclinations.

Now, it seems, we’re perpetually caught in ‘Beyoncé overload,’ where ever SO OFTEN brings yet another twist in the saga of Queen Bey and whatever point she's trying to make this time. Let’s be real: we've gone from "Run the World" to "to the left, to the left!" Between the surprise albums, collaborations, world tours, and viral TikTok crap, it’s as if she’s been caught in a whirlwind of “Look at me!” so much that we’re starting to feel like that one friend who shows up at every party—fun at first, but soon it’s “Oh gotdamn, not again!”

So, can anyone truly stay 'iconic' without veering toward the overly ubiquitous? If it’s all just a ploy to keep us engaged, then kudos to Beyoncé for taking advantage but ol girl is suffocating. I mean, it just may very well be me but, I don't see any other black celebrity doing that. Practically imposing themselves unto the public quite like Beyoncé.

The entertainment industry, particularly the music sector, has often been characterized by a few dominant figures who capture mainstream attention, with Beyoncé being one of the most prominent examples. While her influence is undeniable, it raises the question of visibility and recognition for other black women who are making significant strides in diverse fields beyond music, often overshadowed by the glint of celebrity culture.

To illustrate this point, consider the accomplishments of J'Nai Bridges, an accomplished opera singer whose talent and contributions to music extend far beyond popular genres. Bridges is part of a larger narrative of black artists with actual vocal range whose dedication to their craft contributes to cultural richness and artistic diversity. Operative word: CONTRIBUTE. Not exploit. It's J'Nai's (and other black sopranos like her) in opera that challenges the stereotype that this genre is only for a select few, thereby paving the way for greater representation within classical music.

In addition, the achievements of other women like Tracy Chapman whose landmark moment was when she became the first black person to score a country number one with her solo composition "Fast Car." This achievement not only signified a breakthrough in country music but also emphasizes the importance of recognizing and celebrating diverse narratives within genres traditionally dominated by white artists (or cutthroat opportunists like Beyoncé)

Additionally, beyond the realm of music, black women are making significant impacts in industries such as science and healthcare, exemplified by their involvement in NASA projects and medical patents. Take Robyn N. Gordon for example. She is thee current HBIC of Center Operations at NASA, for Pete's sake! She's held that position since 2009. You ever heard of her? Uhuh, that's what I thought. Also, if you'd like to dig deeper, google Katherine Johnson and Miriam Mann. For those of you who don't like to read for long periods of time, I strongly suggest you stream the movie "Hidden Figures."

Welp, historically, these contributions have been marginalized or unrecognized, yet they play a crucial role in advancing technology and healthcare innovation. For instance, NASA’s diverse team composition illustrates that brilliance and innovation stem from a variety of backgrounds, yet the media often fails to highlight these vital contributions focusing spotlights on pop culture icons like Beyoncé. Yes, you are not crazy. I am mentioning Beyoncé a lot because she is aware of this. She can't be that out of touch. She knows of the power she wields, I mean $10 million for a 3-minute political endorsement?! Yea she can use her platform as a funnel to redirect some of that attention on other black women that are contributing to humanity and are going unnoticed because of her and other (namely) black celebrities. Don't hold your breath during the upcoming Superbowl for a little shoutout to Robyn or any meaningful party contributing to society. smh

Public figures, especially those within the Black community, have a unique position in society. They have the opportunity to elevate others who are making substantial contributions to social justice, education, health, and community development. By spotlighting these unsung heroes, celebrities not only foster a culture of collective responsibility but also combat the narrative that personal success is the ultimate goal.

Highlighting others can also encourage followers to engage more deeply with a variety of issues and communities, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose. This practice can catalyze movements, inspire philanthropic efforts, and create networks of support that empower marginalized voices. It's a shame that this has to even be said but no one cares much about helping once they "make it to the bigtime." Yet here we are having to convince these selfish celebrities to give a damn.

In discussing the tyranny of celebrity, it becomes clear that while specific figures can dominate the conversation, it is vital to broaden the lens through which we discuss success and talent. The narratives surrounding black women in various professional domains are imperative to understanding the multifaceted contributions they make to society. These stories provide not only inspiration but also role models for the youth who may seek paths in fields outside of entertainment.

Ultimately, the need for a more balanced representation in the portrayal of black women's achievements across all sectors cannot be overstated. Their contributions deserve equal celebration to ensure that young people are inspired by a diverse array of role models who reflect the depth and breadth of talent and ability within the community. As we highlight individuals like J'Nai Bridges and Robyn N. Gordon, we take steps toward a more inclusive narrative that recognizes and uplifts many voices often relegated to the background. Please see this link for a POC / NASA roster to help bring those in the back to the forefront. (Could you imagine if I were a public figure of mega proportions?)

The influence of celebrities, particularly those who are highly visible and have millions of followers, extends far beyond the entertainment industry. These individuals wield significant power to shape public opinion, spread awareness, and inspire action. In this context, there exists a moral imperative for them to leverage their platforms for the greater good, highlighting voices and causes that often go unnoticed.

In conclusion, it's not merely a suggestion but a necessary call to action for influential figures to extend their reach beyond themselves. Emphasizing and supporting the work of those who are actively contributing to society reinforces the idea that collective progress is achievable and essential for long-term societal change. Engaging with and promoting altruistic endeavors can lead to a more compassionate and informed society, ultimately benefiting all. With that said: Earth to Beyoncé, ya wanna surprise the world with selfless praise for others? Yea right.
