Proud Country "Bumpkin" In the Making

Hennessy and malt liquor vs. Jack Daniels and moonshine. SUV vs. pickup truck. Spending $2,000 to rent a whole house vs. dropping the same on a cramped studio apartment. The no-brainer comparisons go on and on. So, if you find yourself leaning toward country life, don’t feel guilty—embrace it. It just might be the upgrade you didn’t know you needed.

From Brooklyn to Backroads: A Country Playlist for Urban Souls
As a born-and-raised Brooklynite with over 30 years of city life under my belt, I never thought I’d find myself vibing with country music—let alone living in the actual countryside. But here I am, having traded the cutthroat hustle of the concrete jungle for a slower, richer, and more grounded way of life. And to my surprise, country music has become a big part of that shift. I used to think it wasn’t for me… but now I’ve got a playlist of 50+ songs I’m absolutely certain fellow New Yorkers will appreciate too.
Give it a listen—you might just find your own little piece of peace in it.

28. “Midnight Rider” – The Allman Brothers Band
Bad decisions, moonlight, and vibes. All the essentials. 💙

29. “Hillbilly Banjo” – Parry Music
It’s a hoedown. It’s a showdown. It’s a musical mood swing.

30. “Chattahoochee” – Alan Jackson
Because nothing says growing up like muddy water and questionable swimwear.

31. “I Walk the Line” – Johnny Cash
Loyalty, love, and that deep “don’t mess with me” vibe.

32. “Dirt on My Boots” – Jon Pardi 🫣
It’s clean enough for dinner, dirty enough for trouble.

33. “Wagon Wheel– Darius Rucker
The song that made every non-country fan suddenly learn the chorus.

34. “Boot Scootin’ Boogie – Brooks & Dunn
The song responsible for 90% of bar dance injuries. Worth it.

35. “Take Me Home, Country Roads” – John Denver
Even Brooklyn girls cry in pickup trucks to this one.

36. “Walking After Midnight” – Patsy Cline
Sad. Sultry. Moody and psycho; maybe she really was crazy 😜 bahdumtss!

37. “Bad Moon Rising” – Creedence Clearwater Revival
It’s not paranoia if the moon really is out to get you.

38. “This Kiss” – Faith Hill
A sonic glitter bomb of storybook, euphoric romantic delusion. Yaaas!

39. “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” – Charlie Daniels Band
A fiddle battle for your soul? Sign me the hell up.

40. “Rich Men North of Richmond” – Oliver Anthony
Because being pissed off never sounded so bluegrass!

41. “Before He Cheats” – Carrie Underwood 🤬
It’s called rage therapy. With heels and keys. And a Louisville slugger.

42. “I Won’t Back Down” – Johnny Cash
This song dares you to disagree. Spoiler: You won’t.

43. “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” – Shaboozey
This one’s like a party that forgot what genre it started in—and I’m not mad.

44. “The Gambler” – Kenny Rogers
Life advice wrapped in poker metaphors and damn good advice it is.

45. “Fortunate Son” – CCR
A protest song disguised as a banger. Bless.

46. “Truck Bed” – Hardy 🛻
It’s about heartbreak. And revenge. And redneck energy. 10/10.

47. 🥃 “Tennessee Whiskey” 🍷 – Saltwater Saddles
A smooth-as-strawberry wine- a jam with all the emotional wreckage you crave.

48. "Fancy" Reba McEntire - Mama gives daughter supportive push into high society for a better life. Respect the hustle!

49. “Honky-Tonk Queen” – Moe Bandy
Same title, different flavor. She's the kind of queen that rules neon kingdoms.

50. “White Trash with Money” – Confederate Railroad
Trashy, flashy, and proud. As it should be, bitch. 😉

51. “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain – Willie Nelson
Willie out here snatching souls with a single guitar strum.

52. “Lucille – Kenny Rogers
A tale of betrayal that still stings more than your ex’s rebound post.

53. “Medicate” – Theory of a Deadman
Angsty, grungy, and emotionally reckless. Aka my vibe circa 2002.

54. “I Just Love to Lay You Down” – Conway Twitty ❤️‍🔥
Smooth talkin’, sultry croonin’—and just the right amount of grown-folk business.

55. "Coalminers Daughter" - Loretta Lynn does it again. A deadass real-deal story about growing up dirt poor, prideful too tho - like no hand-outs here, buddy. I WORK FOR MINE!

56. “Whistle” – Flo Rida
Okay, it’s barely country, but it’s got that vibe—and an innuendo, if ya know what I mean.

57. 😒 “Jolene” – Dolly Parton
She begged. She pleaded. Jolene didn’t give a shit. Iconic groveling at its lowest point. Not particularly a fave, but made the list because, it's Dolly freaking Parton.

1. “Get Rhythm” – Johnny Cash 🔥
Because sometimes the only thing that saves your soul is a catchy beat from a man who sounds like he’s been to hell and bought real estate.

2. “Friends in Low Places” – Garth Brooks
Because you never truly know freedom 'til you drunkenly belt this out in a dive bar with people who don’t ask questions and sing along.

3. “I Remember You” – Slim Whitman
Yodel-core nostalgia that hits harder than your ex’s wedding announcement on Facebook.

4. “I Can't Hardly Stand It– Charlie Feathers
Rockabilly chaos in its purest form. Also, how I feel around most people.

The anthem for those of us with sharp wits, sore backs and busted knees.

8. “Parachute” – Chris Stapleton
He could sing a sandwich order and I’d cry. This one’s got the feels.

A track that sounds like leopard print and smudged red lipstick on teeth in audio form.

10. Redneck Piece of White Trash” – Rebel Son
When you're not just embracing the stereotype—you ARE the blueprint.

11. “Quit Your Bitching” – Rebel Son

Harmonica magic and the soundtrack to many poor decisions in the ’90s.

A clapback anthem wrapped in rhinestones and sass. 💯

15. “Flowers on the Wall” – The Statler Brothers
Because if mental health had a soundtrack, this would be track one.

16.Cotton Eyed Joe” – Rednex
It’s chaos. It’s boots. 🙃 It’s banjo techno Armageddon. And I love it.

17. “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” – KT Tunstall
That beat drop? My soul left my body and square-danced into the woods.

18. “For the First Time” – Darius Rucker
Proof that you can go from Hootie to hoedown and still pull at heartstrings.

19. “Satan’s Gotta Get Along Without Me” – Buck Owens
It’s got twang and eternal damnation. I'm sold.

20. “The Joker” – Steve Miller Band

Because fried food, cold beer, and nostalgia are the holy trinity.

26. “Peaches” The Presidents of the United States of America
Country-adjacent lullaby. Also, who doesn’t like peaches?
